Episode 16 Summary

In this insightful interview episode of Modern American Realtor, Casey and Corey discuss the topic of women in the workplace with guests Samantha Welker and Angela Wright. Samantha is a long standing employee and current CFO at Wright Brothers Inc., while Angela has spent three decades building one of the most successful real estate teams in San Diego. Together, they discuss the prevalence of oppression and gender bias in the workplace, key solutions for overcoming these barriers, and practical steps to advocate for the advancement of women.

It is often acknowledged that women face a unique set of challenges within the work environment. Following decades of overt workplace oppression, devaluation of women in careers, and social norms that instructed women to focus on domestic tasks, modern women are now forging a different path. Women across the country have begun to fill essential positions in the workforce, and can be found in top levels of government, leading Fortune 500 companies, and growing influential startups.

However, modern women still face many outdated yet oppressive tendencies in the fight for gender equality. Samantha shares her experience with outdated expectations of women’s roles and the challenges of being taken seriously in the workplace. Additionally, Angela discusses the difficulties of juggling roles and responsibility as a business owner and mother. The conversation provides a valuable insight into the barriers female professionals face in today’s workforce, and impactful suggestions for addressing gender bias.

Social perceptions and outdated traditional expectations of women may also act as restricting forces. The guests discuss the behavioral double standard of negotiating and authoritative management. While men are often revered for this trait, women, alternatively, are more likely to be penalized because of it. Furthermore, Samantha speaks to the impact of social dynamics within the workplace, and the importance of developing a healthy work atmosphere.

The further development of equality in the workplace is not a women’s problem, it is a workplace problem. Businesses must facilitate practical steps to improve support for women, and to advocate for the advancement of female workers. Companies must adhere to equal opportunity employment, pay equality, family based policies, and elimination any internal or conceptual “glass ceiling.” Additionally, the guests impart their opinion on the importance of women sharing their learning experiences, valuable resources, and skills with other women, to encourage and enable overcoming of challenges.

While the promotion of equality for women in the workplace has taken significant steps, it continues to be an ongoing process. Women provide an essential component of the workplace that would otherwise remain void. Their educated backgrounds, unique perspectives, and history of perseverance continues to make women invaluable. Revising outdated beliefs and expectations and advocating for women in leadership positions and advanced professional roles will continue to create greater opportunities in a more diverse workforce.
