How To Do What You Do Best (And Outsource the Rest)

Show Notes

Episode 9 Summary

Welcome to another great episode of Modern American Realtor. After being inundated with questions from previous shows, the Wright brothers discuss strategies and solutions to maximizing online outsourcing within your business. In this episode, Casey and Corey evaluate why you should use online freelancers, the best site to outsource your work, and what tasks to assign to an overseas worker. With over $110,000 spent and 129 online hours logged, the brothers have developed a best practice approach to leveraging the online talent pool and maximizing your time.

There are many advantages to outsourcing, however the most appealing aspect is the extensive cost benefit in leveraging an overseas exchange rate. The advantage to hiring highly qualified employees for a fraction of the local cost cannot be overstated. Casey provides his approach to maximizing times zones and elasticity to create a team that works 24/7 and can be scaled as your needs require.

There are a number of platforms available for all your outsourcing needs. The most popular is Upwork.com (formerly Odesk and Freelancer), which enables you to tap into a rich talent pool of freelancers from all over the world. The process to post a job is simple. Someone looking to hire a freelancer creates an account within the site, and posts a job with the description of the requirements. You can then invite freelancers to work on your project or wait for applicants to reach out to you, allowing you to interview prospective freelancers and select one or more to hire based on their individual merits and vision for the project. The system allows you to budget on a fixed price or an hourly basis and comes equipped with a tool to track the ongoing progress. With these factors in mind, the Wright brothers provide personal insight into creating highly effective posts for attracting talented freelancers to your project.

With such an extensive ecosystem of freelancers, the opportunities for what you can outsource are limited only to your imagination. However, just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Agents can benefit from employing virtual assistants to manage time consuming tasks, while designers may assist with marketing projects. Agents often ask whether social media can be outsourced to the cloud, and Corey shares his opinion evaluating which tasks are best leveraged online as opposed to the roles that should stay in house.

The availability of online outsourcing has created tremendous opportunity for realtors and business owners alike. Undoubtedly, there are elements of your business that can be addressed by freelancers, taking advantage of the cost, time and scalability benefits. However there are many pitfalls which may negatively impact your business. As long time outsourcing veterans, Corey and Casey provide valuable insight into maximizing the immense potential cloud based talent pools.
