Episode 6 Summary

Welcome to another episode of Modern American Realtor with The Wright Brothers. This week Corey and Casey discuss the recent San Diego Association of Realtors expo, which featured trade representatives, keynote speakers, and industry workshops. This episode the brothers discuss the dramatic change in vendor products, the keynote presentations from industry giants like Realtor.com and Zillow, and the buzz surrounding drone photography in real estate.

Previous years have seen the trade show vendors selling mostly physical marketing products. This year there was a noticeable shift towards various forms of informational products and services. Additionally, the excitement surrounding drone photography within real estate was also noticeable, with many workshops and vendors representing the sector. The brothers discuss their opinion on the informational product trend, and their thoughts on its sustainability as agents struggle to navigate and evaluate the abundance of options.

One of the main expo attractions was the keynote presentations from industry giants Realtor.com, Trulia, and Zillow. Each representative was given a 20 minute open platform to discuss the future of online listing portals and their strategies on property data syndication. While industry professionals picked sides on the IDX debate, Corey details why he believes consumers will ultimately drive decisions.

Additionally, guest speakers from the Austin Board of Realtors and Houston Association of Realtors were invited to discuss their approach on property listing syndication. Both industry associations have taken steps to create their own listing portal, with HAR.com, which accounts for two thirds of property searches in the greater Houston area. Casey looks at the strategies each association has employed and how it affects agents in the area.

Twitter recently launched a unique new platform called Periscope. This live broadcasting app is rapidly gaining in popularity. The app allows users to live broadcast audio and video to anyone online while viewers can interact via text. Casey and Corey discuss the benefits of being an early adopter of new technologies, and strategies agents can use to incorporate Periscope into their business.

As technology continues to influence society and trends, changes are inevitable in all industries. As real estate professionals speculate the lasting impact of everything from Zillow.com to drone photography, technology continues to rapidly progress. Successful modern Realtors who practice a “customers first” business model will integrate these technological advances into their practice, and recognize the advantage it affords them.
